Busy Saturday on March 7, 2009

Busy Saturday - Part I: Dropped off Danielle for her Odyssey of the Mind competition, then on to Drew's exhibition baseball game for Opening Day. Notice the "tongue-in-cheek" action as he runs to the base.
Busy Saturday - Part II: After Drew's game, we headed over to see the "Long Term" part of Danielle's competition. Odyssey of the Mind is divided into to three Divisions based on age, Danielle was Division I. Then, they divide the schools into groups of 7-12 teams and they give each group a different problem to work out. Danielle's group had the problem, "The Lost Labor of Hercules." They had to come up with a labor that no one had heard of that Hercules had to perform, and a reason why the labor was not known in history. Here is Danielle holding part of the set, which the team decided to do completely out of recyclable materials. Not sure why the smallest person is holding the biggest piece, but that's Danielle. The part of the competition we could not see is called "Spontaneous." The team enters a room and is given a problem they did not know before. They are to come up with a creative way to solve the problem. Danielle has been going to school early three times a week with her team to come up with their skit and practice solving spontaneous problems. The team has to do everything on their own: script, costumes, and set. They have a coach to guide them but can not receive any help from parents, not even helpful suggestions. They did a great job!
Busy Saturday - Part III: After the performance, Danielle could go. Off we went to her softball game back at Opening Day at the ballpark. They also had blow-up equipment there so the kids had fun with that too. Here they are all heading over to the biiiiiig slide.
WEEEEEEEEE!
Danielle is not so sure...
Brinley settled on some tattoos. Eventually all the kids got some.
Hey, why not start early and just get it out of the way?

Busy Saturday - Part IV: After the ball game and festivities, Danielle had time to go home and change her clothes and then I took her back for the Odyssey of the Mind's award ceremony. Here she is after getting the team medal of third place. They also won an Omar (sp?) award for making their set and costumes "green." In the spontaneous part, they had the top score, a perfect 100.
Here is Danielle with Gavin, Indy, and Andrew, members of her team. It was a long day but how fun it is to watch your children doing things that they love? Nothing compares...

WOW! That WAS some busy Saturday. Good thing everyone is doing pull-ups! You need cardio AND strength training to get through days that are that long! But isn't it just wonderful, too?
