Grandpa in Haiti

Here are some pictures of Carl en route to Port-au-Prince and in Haiti. The first picture is of the doctors getting briefed at SLC airport. Carl is in the black jacket in the center with the beige hat on. They are being shown the bags the LDS church put together to take with them: one black bag with tent, sleeping bag, and enough food for a week and one blue bag filled with medical supplies needed to treat or stabilize people.


This is Carl in Fort Lauderdale. They arrived there Sunday night but couldn't get a flight into Port-au-Prince. They discussed several options. Finally, they came up with a plan. Here is an excerpt from the Healing Hands for Haiti blog: "When we found that we couldn’t get a charter plane from Ft. Lauderdale, we hired a bus and drove the 45 minutes to Miami. We got on a flight to Santo Domingo which got in around midnight. From the airport, we were loaded on two Domnican buses, the really crowded bumpy kind although ours had pink fringed curtains which was certainly a nice touch. Then 8 bumping, grinding, neck cramping hours from Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince. The driver blared merengue music from the speakers for most of the journey but no one said anything because we figured it might help him stay awake.Here is Carl treating a man's leg, he is in the dark blue scrubs, holding the man's leg. The picture below he is on the left, obviously in a bus on his way somewhere." The blog states that the group had been awake for 36 hours straight by the time he wrote the post.

It was amazing to know that he was there, but we are grateful he is home. In true Carl fashion, his phone call to Grandma to let him know he was okay and he would be home Sunday (the 24th) included a request to make sure and have his surgeries lined up for Monday. Thank goodness Marty is a wise woman who had all his surgeries pushed a week away. We are so sad for the people in Haiti and so grateful to belong to a church that sends what is needed as swiftly as they can. The LDS leadership has called for members world wide to help the people in Haiti, there official statement can be found on lds.org.
That same week, we got a ton of rain here. Which we LOVED! I took a picture of this rainbow, a rare sight indeed here. I couldn't help feeling how blessed I was and so overwhelmed at how lucky I am to live here in the country I do.
